    Environmental Health, Safety, and Risk Management

    The Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) strives to provide a healthy and safe environment at Baruch College through the entire College community’s cooperative efforts. This is accomplished through various initiatives and programs the office oversees using city, state, and federal regulations as guidelines on environmental and occupational health and safety issues.

    Services

    Extermination

    EHSRM oversees extermination practices at Baruch through an outside contractor. If you are having any type of extermination issue, or require extermination services please Submit a Work Request through Archibus.

    Indoor Air Quality

    EHSRM investigates air quality issues around the College. If you or someone on your staff is having an indoor air quality issue, please contact us at 646-660-6048.

    Air quality investigations involve several steps:

    • Interviewing occupants to identify issues
    • A thorough walk-through of the area, sometimes with Building and Grounds staff
    • Direct reading sampling
    • Sampling with laboratory analysis
    • Report generated
    Trainings and Programs

    EHS trains staff from Buildings and Grounds, Natural Sciences, Public Safety, and other departments. Training and programs offered include:

    • NYS Right to Know/OSHA Hazard Communication

    All employees that handle or come into contact with hazardous materials as part of their normal work duties are required to have Hazard Communication training.

    • Laboratory Safety
    • Radiation Safety
    • OSHA Issues
    • Environmental Issues (EPA)

    Waste Management

    E-waste

    E-waste is specified electronics that cannot be discarded into the regular trash. This includes the following:

    • Computers and all peripherals
    • Printers
    • Faxes machines
    • Copiers
    • Other computer hardware
    • Televisions
    • CDs, DVDs
    • DVD players, ect.

    Call the BCTC Help Desk at 646-312-1010 or e-mail helpdesk@baruch.cuny.edu to have your electronic equipment removed and disposed of as e-waste. In the request, state the type of equipment, make and model number, CUNY bar code, your department, and the location of equipment.

    Hazardous Chemical Waste

    Chemicals cannot be poured down the drain or thrown in the trash without the consent of EHSRM. Baruch utilizes the services of a chemical waste contractor to remove these materials and dispose of them in a safe and legal manner. If you have old or unwanted chemicals, please contact us at 646-660-6048

    Universal Waste

    Universal waste is waste that is not designated as hazardous waste, but cannot go into the regular trash. This is:

    • Fluorescent light bulbs
    • All non-dry cell batteries (metal halide, nickel cadmium, lead acid, etc.)

    For these items contact Buildings and Grounds at 646-660-6630 or submit a work request.

    Infectious Waste

    Infectious waste can be any material containing human blood or bodily fluids. The material must be cleaned up by trained custodial personnel, and will be removed, placed in a red bag or sharps container, and disposed of by the medical waste.

    If you have any material that you think constitutes medical waste or you have a medical waste situation, please contact us at 646-660-6048. Baruch utilizes the services of a contractor to dispose of medical waste.
