    Elevator/Escalator Policies

    Guidance for Safe Elevator Use

Baruch’s Facilities and Operations team works diligently to keep our elevators in safe working order. Because of our reliance on vertical means of transportation, Baruch College has made a significant investment in ensuring our elevators are functioning and in service including:

    • Services from an on-site third-party provider to maintain our elevators daily.
    • Regular independent inspection and testing.

Even with this critical oversight, we could use your help! The steps below will make a meaningful difference in reducing outages or further wear and tear:

    • Avoid overcrowding the elevator cabs. Consider taking the stairs where possible to lessen crowding.
    • Do not use your body to hold open or lean on elevator doors.
    • Keep clothing or bags clear of closing elevator doors.
    • Never use an elevator in the event of a fire.

In the event an elevator gets stuck, or something is not working correctly:

    • Please remain calm and use the emergency call button or phone to notify Public Safety and follow their instructions.
    • Never attempt to exit a stalled elevator without the help of building management or emergency responder.
    • Move to the rear center of the elevator and face the doors while waiting for help.
    • Be courteous to other riders especially those that need assistance.
    Guidance for Safe Escalator Use

When using escalators, please keep the following safety tips in mind to help prevent disruptions and ensure safe operation:

    • Do not wear loose clothing, scarves, or items that could get caught in the escalator. Ensure shoelaces are tied and avoid flip-flops or soft-soled shoes.
    • Do not board an escalator with baby strollers, walkers, or wheeled carts. If you have such items, use an elevator instead.
    • Immediately move clear of the escalator exit area; don’t stop to talk or look around since other passengers may be behind you.
    • Don’t climb onto or ride the handrail. Do not sit on steps.

In the event an escalator stops or isn’t working properly:

    • Step off carefully and report the issue to Public Safety at (646) 660-6000.
    Escalator Operational Policy

The following escalator policy is in place to conserve energy and minimize equipment wear:

Normal weekday operational hours when classes are in session (Fall/Spring/Summer):

    • Escalators are to be turned on at 7 am.
    • Escalators are to be turned off at 8:30 pm.

Fridays and when classes are not held:

    • On normal Fridays or when the College is open, but no classes are held, only the sub-levels and 1st to 2nd floors will operate. Floors 3 to 5 are turned off.
    • On compressed summer Fridays all escalators are turned off.

    Weekends:

    • On Saturdays, the sub-level escalators are to be turned on at 8 am and off at 8 pm. All other escalators are turned off.
    • All escalators are turned off on all Sundays.
    • On compressed summer weekends, all escalators are turned off.

    Exceptions:

    • Special requests for events to have the specific escalators turned on and/ or reverse directions on sublevels ( e.g., ARC basketball tournament on a Sunday; Parent Open House on a Saturday; Career Services Fair requiring reverse directions, etc.).
    • If the ARC or BPAC elevators are not operational and activities are conducted in either of those spaces, then the lower levels shall be turned on for the event’s duration.
    Special Escalator Request

If a special escalator request is needed for an event, please submit requests by email at least five days in advance to jinhyon.lee@baruch.cuny.edu.Enter “Escalator Request – Time Sensitive” in the subject title.

Include all of the following information in your email request:

    • Description of the event
    • Where will the event take place
    • The date(s) of the event
    • The start and end time of the event
    • The expected headcount of the event
    • Which escalators are being requested (i.e. sublevels; 1st to 2nd floor; 3rd to 5th floors)
    • On the sublevels: specify if the escalator needs to reverse direction (from up to down or down to up) and at what times they should be reversed.
